Song – The Liberal March
12 June 2004 (13:35:08)
In the age of the 'soundbite' and sophisticated electoral techniques, it is easy to forget that in times not so long ago, the mass media of the day was the popular song. The trick was to take a well-known tune (this almost inevitably meant a hymn) and provide new words to get your message across. The Liberal March dates from the 1982 General Election, and a well-crafted song clearly lasts longer than a press release or a photo opportunity

The Glory Days

The Liberal March

(Men of Harlech)

Men and Liberals! ye whose action
Put to rout the Tory faction
In their ranks, spread wild distraction,
Vanquished all their bands.
Follow still the chiefs who lead ye,
Keep your ranks still, firm and steady,
Keep your swords still, sharp and ready,
Ready to your hands.

Chorus:
Shoulder press to shoulder,
Onward march and bolder,
Triumphs more we yet shall see,
Before we get much older.
'Peace, Reform and Liberation'
Be our triune aspiration,
Till we win them for the nation,
And our land be free.

Honest principles inspire us;
Calls of noble leaders fire us;
In the struggle nought shall fire us,
Till the work be done
Every man in combat straining,
Foot by foot the vantage gaining
Till the Liberal cause be reigning,
And the fight be won

Chorus

Gladstone's government shall rule us;
Men like these will lead not school us,
Tory tricks no more shall fool us,
We've a better way!
Equal rights each shall be sharing;
Equal burdens all be bearing;
Each for all, for all each caring;
Hail the happy day!

Chorus
